Nielsen reports mobile internet usage

The full title of the report is “Critical Mass: The worldwide state of the mobile web” (click to download pdf). It may sound a little like a marketing slogan (critical mass etc.), but I have tried to acquaint myself with it without any anticipations.

Report is based on the researches made in 16 countries across America, Europe and Asia. It basically says that growth in the mobile internet usage is constant and now it reached the point where it can start to be used by the marketing on the wide scale. The sources of the growth are new phones that are giving better user experience , faster data transmission offered by carriers, and unlimited data plans. Combination of those three attracts more and more people to surf the web via their mobiles, and that’s how a chain reaction starts…

Mobile internet usage accoring to the report

I couldn’t agree more with those conclusions, but I think, that somehow in the statistics was omitted the very large player. Actually the largest one! I’m thinking about the Korea which in 2002 has 40% active subscribers of data transmission. In this light, US with 15.6% in 2008 seems not as high as authors are stating. According to TelcomsKorea, currently they have 80% use of mobile internet among all mobile users. I don’t have to say that this is a very high number. There are opinions that in that region mobile internet is more often used that on PC. US and Europe will have to wait a long time until they reach such a level. It might be a good lesson to track back the ways of how this was achieved there, and try to take advantage of this knowledge - cause “future of the internet lies with mobile users”*.

Mobile operators are developing data services which they do provide to their subscribers over 3G networks.
